ABC’s medical drama, Private Practice from Shonda Rhimes will end after this current sixth season of 13 episodes. ABC also opted to not pick up the series’ back-nine episodes. The drama, starring Kate Walsh was renewed in May after the network had moved the series from its post Grey’s Anatomy slot on Thursdays to Tuesdays to make room for Rhimes’ Washington, DC-set drama Scandal. Private Practice continues to air on Tuesdays at 10p and is averaging a 1.6 rating among A18-49 this season which is down from its fifth season average of 2.3 in the demo.

Four other returning series on ABC received additional episode orders. Two more episodes were added to Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and The Middle and one extra episode was given to Castle. With these orders, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and The Middle are now at 24 episodes each this season and Castle is at 23 episodes. Furthermore, ABC gave two additional scripts for new dramas 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort.

NBC is the second network to cancel a rookie show from the fall broadcast season as Animal Practice is exiting off the network’s schedule and is being replaced with the second season of Whitney beginning November 14. Until this date, Animal Practice will continue to air in the Wednesday 8p time slot. For its most recent airing, Animal Practice delivered a 1.0 rating among A18-49. CBS was the first network to cancel a new show, pulling the drama Made in Jersey.

Tonight, HGTV debuts new series Home Strange Home and the network will continue production on the series for a second season with eight all-new one-hour episodes. HGTV also renewed You Live in What? and Extreme Homes for a second and third seasons respectively with eight one-hour episodes each. Home Strange Home, hosted by comedian Chuck Nice, tours eccentric and bizarre residences from a modern-day Peter Pan’s Neverland to a home made out of animal bones. Extreme Homes currently airs on Thursdays at 9p and offers an up-close look at some of the most spectacular houses ever built. Season three of Extreme Homes will premiere in first quarter 2013. You Live in What? goes inside the homes of people who live in outrageous abodes and season two will be back on HGTV’s schedule in early 2013.

FX’s new miniseries American Horror Story: Asylum launched Wednesday and over multiple telecasts (10p premiere and encores at 1105p and 1a) attracted 5.79 million total viewers; 4.17 million with A18-49; and 2.7 million among A18-34. For the 10p premiere episode, AHS: Asylum delivered 3.85 million total viewers; 2.78 million A18-49 viewers and a 2.20 rating; as well as 1.78 million with A18-34 and a 2.63 rating.

Rock star Bret Michaels was tapped to host the new original series Rock My RV with Bret Michaels on Travel Channel. The network forged a talent deal with Michaels to host the eight-episode half-hour series that has been approved for production beginning next month. In the series, Michaels will lead a team of skilled, custom RV designers and fabricators who transform ordinary RVs into over-the-top mobile mansions. Rock My RV will premiere in 2013 and is produced by BCII Productions for Travel Channel.

The Mummy star Brendan Fraser was cast to star in TNT’s drama pilot Legends from executive producer Howard Gordon (Homeland). Legends is about a deep-cover operative named Martin Odum who has an extraordinary ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. Gordon, Jeffrey Nachmanoff, Alexander Cary and Jonathan Levin developed the project based on the book by Robert Littell. David Semel will direct the pilot and be an executive producer along with Fraser who plays Martin in the pilot. Fox 21 is producing.

Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg landed a role in an untitled FOX comedy pilot from Parks and Recreation co-creator Mike Schur and executive producer Dan Goor. The single-camera project is about a diverse group of detectives in a precinct located at the edge of New York City. Samberg will play the lead investigator.

Tuesday night’s 2nd Presidential Debate drew an average of 65.6 million people, according to Nielsen. The town-hall style debate between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney, which aired live from approximately 9p to 1045p, was down 2% from the first presidential debate earlier this month though it delivered +4% compared to the second presidential debate between President Obama and Sen. John McCain in 2008. Twelve networks carried Tuesday’s debate: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Telemundo, Univision, PBS, CNN, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, Current TV and CNBC. Among the broadcast networks, NBC led with 13.8 million total viewers, followed by ABC with 12.5 million, CBS at 8.9 million and FOX with 4.6 million. On the cable news networks, FOX News tallied the most at 11.1 million with CNN next at 5.8 and MSNBC at 4.9 million.
