FOX revealed yesterday Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler is exiting American Idol where he served as one of the judges for seasons 10 and 11. Tyler is leaving the competition show to concentrate more on his music as his band Aerosmith will release a new album on November 6. “It’s been a tremendous honor to have Steven – one of the most prolific artists in the world – on AMERICAN IDOL for the past two seasons,” said Mike Darnell, President/Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “He’s been a terrific judge, a true friend and great mentor to everyone involved with the show, and we know he’ll continue to be a huge inspiration to IDOL hopefuls for years to come. We are very sad that Steven has chosen to focus more on his music, but we always knew when we hired a rock ‘n’ roll legend, he would go back to the music. We all wish him all the best and would love to have him back on the show anytime.” American Idol is produced by 19 Entertainment, a division of CKX, Inc. and FremantleMedia North America, Inc.

Many of Viacom’s cable channels went dark on DirecTV Tuesday just before midnight ET as the two companies reached an impasse in their negotiations concerning a new carriage deal. Specifically, the channels that are now dark on DirecTV include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET, VH1, CMT, Logo, Spike, TV Land, MTV2, VH1 Classic, Palladia, Nick Jr., NickToons and TeenNick as well as their hi-def related networks. Counting the hi-def channels, DirecTV carries a total of 26 Viacom-owned channels. A Viacom rep on the company’s blog wrote that DirecTV “dropped the channels without giving Viacom advanced warning,” and further stated the last time the two entities were in contact was at 11a on Tuesday. DirecTV, which has around 20 million subscribers, related Viacom is asking for a carriage fee increase of more than 30% and blames the blackout on Viacom. Furthermore, to put pressure on DirecTV to resolve their carriage dispute, Viacom is also limiting free online access to many of its top shows. Full episodes of The Daily Show, SpongeBob SquarePants, Jersey Shore and The Colbert Report among others are now currently not available.
