Television veteran and one of the industry’s top producers, Lee Rich died at his home in Los Angeles last Thursday at the age of 93. Mr. Rich was the former president and co-founder of Lorimar Productions and producer of some of the most iconic TV series ever in the 1970s and 1980s including Dallas, Knots Landing and The Waltons. Before becoming a TV producer, Mr. Rich was an advertising executive working for the Benton & Bowles agency serving as the sponsors’ representative on TV shows and as manager of the agency’s program department. In 1965, Mr. Rich switched to a producer’s hat as a partner in the Mirisch-Rich Co. Under his guidance, he produced the WW II series The Rat Patrol and the sitcom Hey, Landlord before returning briefly to advertising at the Leo Burnett Agency. In 1969, Mr. Rich and Merv Adelson established Lorimar Productions. The first big hit for the production company was the heart-warming family drama, The Waltons that went on to win multiple Emmy Awards and ran on CBS from 1972 to 1981. Mr. Rich was behind other hit TV series including the primetime soaps Falcon Crest and Flamingo Road, the family comedy/drama Eight Is Enough, the 1973 miniseries The Blue Knight and such TV movies as Sybil and Helter Skelter, both in 1976. From past interviews, Mr. Rich was equally proud of the series The Waltons and Dallas, despite the two series representing opposite family types. Mr. Rich left Lorimar in 1986 to join MGM/UA Communications and during his two years there as chairman/CEO he approved such films as A Fish Called Wanda, Moonstruck and Rain Man. Following this, Mr. Rich founded Lee Rich Productions, a television and film production company based at Warner Bros. where his present project, the feature film Replay is in development. Mr. Rich is survived by his longtime partner, Pippa Scott; five children; and seven grandchildren.
