Nearly three months ahead of its second season premiere, Showtime offers viewers a special half-hour preview episode of The Franchise: A Season with the Miami Marlins this Saturday at 9p. The preview episode gives an opening look at what is in store for season two as cameras follow the operations and activities of the Marlins from spring training through the opening weeks of the baseball season. Showtime has set the official date for the one-hour premiere episode on July 11 at 10p and subsequent episodes will air Wednesdays at 10p for seven weeks following. The Franchise is a collaboration between Showtime and Major League Baseball Productions.

Award-winning actress Ellen Burstyn is joining the cast of USA Network’s original series Political Animals which also stars Sigourney Weaver, Ciaran Hinds, Carla Gugino, James Wolk, Sebastian Stan and Brittany Ishibashi. The six-hour drama series has Burstyn starring as Margaret Barrish, mother to current Secretary of State Elaine Barrish Hammond (Weaver). Margaret is described as a tough Chicago woman and former Vegas showgirl who has a biting wit and is likely to turn to alcohol to help her cope with a political evening. Political Animals, slated to premiere this summer is from Berlanti Productions and Laurence Mark Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Skyler Day, most recently seen on NBC’s Parenthood landed a recurring role on Lifetime’s Army Wives for its sixth season. Day will play Sophie Clarke, the teenage daughter of Jackie Clarke (Kelli Williams) and Army Gen. Clarke (Robert John Burke).

This Sunday, BBC America will air a new two-hour Planet Earth special titled The Making of Planet Earth at 9p narrated by Dan Stevens (Downtown Abbey’s Matthew). To celebrate Earth Day, BBC America is also airing the first ever US broadcast premiere of the full Planet Earth series over two days starting this Saturday at 6a through Sunday at 9p. The Making of Planet Earth special will air on Sunday at 9p following the Planet Earth series.
