Gil Noble, considered a New York broadcasting legend and who served as producer and host of WABC-TV’s public affairs program Like It Is, died yesterday at the age of 80. Mr. Noble, who was born in Harlem, spent his life working and serving his community gaining recognition throughout his career both locally and nationally as he documented African-American lives and contributions. During his storied career, Mr. Noble had the opportunity to interview numerous national and international heads of state including South Africa’s President Nelson Mandela and Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe; entertainment icons including Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne; sports stars like Muhammad Ali and Arthur Ashe; and political figures such as Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan among many more. Mr. Noble also created documentaries profiling notables including Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Charlie Parker among several others. Instead of flowers, Mr. Noble’s family requests donations sent to the Gil Noble Archives, P.O. Box 43138, Upper Montclair, NJ 07043. Proceeds will go to preserve the archives so that Mr. Noble’s mission of educating the community about its culture and history will continue.
