Pop singer and film star icon, Whitney Houston, 48 died on Saturday in Beverly Hills, CA. Ms. Houston was in Los Angeles to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party hosted by Clive Davis, the founder of Arista Records and the man considered to be her pop mentor. Throughout her singing career, Ms. Houston used her lush, three octave singing range to achieve hit after hit and her 1987 album “Whitney” became the first female album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Charts. Ms. Houston won numerous awards for her singing talent including six Grammys Awards. In 1992, she transitioned to becoming a movie star starting with her first film role in The Bodyguard, followed by other starring roles in Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996). Ms. Houston also played the role of the Fairy Godmother in a TV movie version of Cinderella (1997) for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and most recently she had a role in the upcoming film Sparkle currently in post-production and considered a comeback vehicle for the singer and actress. Ms. Houston also won a Primetime Emmy in 1986 for her Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program for The 28th Annual Grammy Awards on CBS. From her marriage to Bobby Brown, Ms. Houston has one surviving daughter, Bobbi Kristina now 18. Ms. Houston is also survived by her mother. In addition to her many awards, BET honored Ms. Houston with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Debra L. Lee, Chairman/CEO of BET Networks released this statement upon: “We are all simply heartbroken by the sudden passing of Whitney Houston. She was among the greatest artists of our time. She was an icon, trailblazer, international phenomenon — an incomparable talent that will forever be missed. Our prayers and condolences go out to her daughter, mother and her entire family. We will always love her.”

Several networks will be honoring the late Whitney Houston with specials tonight and later this week: BET’s 106 & Park will pay tribute to the singer’s life and legacy in a three-hour episode beginning at 6p tonight; Lifetime is airing The Bodyguard tonight at 8p; VH1 has three specials including the VH1 News Special: Whitney Houston: Death of a Diva tonight at 930p, and on Thursday the VH1 News Presents Whitney Houston’s Greatest Moments at 11p as well as next week’s special 100 Greatest Women in Music that will include an updated salute to Ms. Houston; VH1 Classics will air the tribute Whitney A-to-Z on Tuesday at 1p and again at 8p; and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will offer the two-hour special Remembering Whitney: The Oprah Interview this Thursday at 9p.

Real-life spouses and producers Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) sold an untitled comedy pilot to CBS. The project will star Falcone who will also co-write and McCarthy (who also stars on CBS’ Mike & Molly) will serve as EP. The plot is about a 37-year old single guy (Falcone) who loses everything in the real estate collapse and finds himself back home in the house he grew up in and living with his parents. Larry Dorf is also a co-writer.

Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) will star in a comedy pilot ordered by FOX titled The Goodwin Games. The plot is about a father who wills his fortune to his three children only if they agree to his terms. Newton will play one of the leads. She also is ready to begin her recurring role on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother. HIMYM’s Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris are all writers and EPs on The Goodwin Games.

Roseanne Barr and John Goodman (both former stars of Roseanne) are reuniting on the previously-announced multi-camera comedy pilot for NBC called Downwardly Mobile. The project is co-created by Barr and she stars as the head of a mobile home park where she acts as the surrogate mother to the residents. Goodman will play one of the residents. Eric Gilliland (Roseanne) is the other co-creator.
