Louisiana’s Bayou is the setting of Discovery Channel’s new reality series Ragin’ Cajuns premiering January 17 at 10p. Venice, Louisiana once was a thriving shrimping community and following the devastation by both Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the oil spill in 2010, the area is struggling to survive. The Bayou boys featured in this series continue though to work hard and play even harder. Ragin’ Cajuns is produced for Discovery Channel by Gurney Productions.

Fans of Animal Planet’s Whale Wars learned yesterday the series will return for a fifth season next June via Facebook. The upcoming season will again follow Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s campaign against whaling in Antarctica. The number of episodes for the fifth season was not yet revealed. During its last season, Whale Wars averaged 1.06 million total viewers and ranks in the top three best-performing series in 2011 for Animal Planet among total viewers, A25-54, M25-54 and W25-54. The Lizard Trading Company produces Whale Wars.

The series documents the history of the logging industry and details how technology has transformed those working in logging today even though the battle with nature remains constant. Next spring, Sundance Channel will premiere a second series of short films titled Beginnings from director Chiara Clemente. The films feature six creative Parisians exploring their early inspirations. Last year, the network aired seven episodes of Beginnings about creative New Yorkers. Beginnings is produced by Tanya Selvaratnam for Di San Luca Films.

Nat Geo WILD’s recent Second Annual Big Cat Week airing from December 12 through December 18 delivered the network’s highest rated week since its launch. Primetime programming featuring big cats throughout the week pulled in 5.9 million total viewers, 1.4 million more than in 2010.
