ABC News announced Christiane Amanpour anchor of This Week will take on a new role within the ABC News division as the Global Affairs anchor across all platforms effective immediately. Amanpour will focus on foreign affairs reporting for ABC in primetime specials and for the network’s news broadcasts. Beginning January 8, George Stephanopoulos will take on the dual role as anchor of This Week in addition to his current role as anchor on Good Morning America. In addition to remaining at ABC News, Amanpour will host a weekday show on CNN International. Jim Walton, President of CNN Worldwide issued this statement regarding Amanpour’s new role: “Christiane Amanpour has been synonymous with international reporting and with CNN for many years. We could not be happier that through this unique arrangement with ABC News her experience and global perspective are returning to a nightly news broadcast for our international audience.”

Yesterday, the FCC passed rules that would lower the volume on television commercials. The new rules are part of the legislation passed in 2010 and signed by President Obama called the CALM Act (Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation). The rules will go into effect on December 13, 2012 and will charge television stations, cable operators and others to keep the volume on both local and national ads to the same level as the program surrounding it.

On New Year’s Day, FUEL TV, the entertainment and sports network from FOX Sports Media Group, launches the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) with a 24-hour marathon featuring five show premieres beginning at 12a. For the coming New Year, FUEL TV will serve up more than 2,000 hours of UFC programming with 100+ hours of live fights, weigh-ins, preliminary matches and pre- and post-fight shows. Also on January 3, FUEL TV premieres UFC Tonight at 10p, the network’s official news and information program of the UFC hosted by Todd Harris.

Comedy series The League was granted a fourth season renewal by FX. The network ordered 13 episodes from FX Productions. Presently in its third season, The League is averaging 1.7 million total viewers and 1.5 million with A18-49.

Season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race launches on Logo with a 90-minute premiere episode January 30 at 9p. Thirteen drag queens compete for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” while a slew of celebrities appear as guest judges including Elvira, Jennifer Tilly, Natalie Cole, Rick Fox and many more. On the same night, Logo will also debut a new season of its behind-the-scenes show Untucked: RuPaul’s Drag Race at 1030p. World of Wonder Productions is behind both series.

Soon after Valentine’s Day, E! brings back new second seasons of its half-hour series Khloe & Lamar and Ice Loves Coco. Twelve new episodes of Khloe & Lamar and ten new episodes of Ice Loves Coco premiere February 19 at 10p and 1030p respectively. Khloe & Lamar is produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions and Bunim-Murray Productions while Ice Loves Coco is created and produced by Comcast Entertainment Studios.

This past Sunday, HBO aired the season finale of Boardwalk Empire which tallied a season high of 3.0 million total viewers at 9p and another 834,000 for the 11p encore airing for a combined audience of 3.8 million for the night. HBO additionally aired a preview of new series LUCK which brought in an average of 1.1 million viewers at 10p. LUCK will premiere January 29.
