One of the comedy writers behind the beloved I Love Lucy series, Madelyn Pugh Davis died on Wednesday at her home in Bel-Air. She was 90. Ms. Davis worked as part of a writing team with Bob Carroll Jr. and the pair wrote most of the I Love Lucy episodes. Prior to the television show, Ms. Davis and Mr. Carroll worked on Lucille Ball’s CBS radio show “My Favorite Husband” which provided a springboard for Ms. Ball’s transition to television. Ms. Davis, Mr. Carroll and Jess Oppenheimer wrote the pilot episode for I Love Lucy which premiered in 1951 and the team of Davis-Carroll remained with the show during its six season run. Later, Ms. Davis and Mr. Carroll continued to work with Ms. Ball as writers on her other TV series including The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy. Later, the team worked on the 1970s comedy series Alice.
