Merlin Olsen, 69, former pro football player-turned television actor and NFL broadcaster, died near Los Angeles early yesterday. Olsen was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining in 2009. Olsen was an All-American at his alma mater, Utah State and a first-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 1962. Olsen, along with Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier became the Rams’ famous “Fearsome Foursome” defensive line. To this day, Olsen is still the Rams’ leader in career tackles with 915. Olsen retired from pro football in 1976 and was voted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. Olsen’s football career was succeeded by a television acting career which included the family series Little House on the Prairie followed by a starring turn in his own series Father Murphy from 1981-1983 and the short-lived series Aaron’s Way in 1988. This last December, Utah State honored Olsen by naming the football field at Romney Stadium “Merlin Olsen Field.” Utah State will also erect a statue of Olsen at the stadium. Additionally during the Rams’ game on December 20, the team paid a video tribute to Olsen, narrated by Olsen’s former broadcast partner, Dick Enberg.

CASTING CALL
Bonanza Productions Inc. is hosting an open casting call seeking physically-challenged boys aged 10-13 who use a wheelchair to play an 11-year old character in a new 30m comedy pilot created by and starring Paul Reiser (Mad About You) for NBC. The character is described as a sweet, funny, intelligent kid who has a positive outlook. He loves sports, music and everyone he meets including adults. He also remembers everything and is very inquisitive, though he can also become anxious and obsessive about things. The character has also used a wheelchair since birth, so the casting agents are only looking for boys who use a wheelchair. The online search is now open and continues through March 19, 2010. Production for the pilot will take place in Los Angeles over one week, starting April 7. For more information or to submit, visit www.tvpilotcastingcall.com.
