Pernell Roberts, 81, best-known for his stint as Adam Cartwright on Bonanza, died Sunday of cancer at home in Malibu. As one of the Cartwright brothers, Pernell stayed with Bonanza for six seasons, opting to leave the show in 1965. Pernell’s departure from Bonanza, after fulfilling his initial six-year contract, shocked Hollywood and many thought his career would be forever hurt as a result of leaving a top-rated show at the pinnacle of its popularity. For the next 14 years, Pernell made numerous appearances on TV shows including The Virginian, Hawaii Five-O and Mission Impossible among others. He also toured with theatrical musicals The King and I, Camelot and The Music Man. In 1979, Pernell was cast in the title role of series Trapper John, M.D., a spin-off of MASH.
