ABC News’ Charles Gibson announced yesterday he will retire as anchor from World News at the end of this year. Additionally he will retire from full-time work at ABC News. Beginning in January 2010, Good Morning America’s Diane Sawyer will assume the anchor duties at World News. In an email to World News staff announcing his decision Gibson said: “It has not been an easy decision to make. This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul.” Gibson has anchored World News since May 2006 following the death of anchor Peter Jennings and the injury in Iraq of co-anchor Bob Woodruff.

WPIX/New York is planning some sweet surprises for New Yorkers on September 8 tied in with the launch of The CW’s Melrose Place. WPIX is teaming with a mobile cupcake truck in Manhattan to create a special Melrose Place cupcake called S’more Drama. The network is purchasing 1,100 of these cupcakes (being channel 11) which will be distributed for free in the afternoon by 11 male models from the agency Flaunt. In addition, the 11 guys will be escorted around NYC in a stretch Mini Cooper limo wrapped with show graphics. Later that evening, the male models will be at Penn Station handing out Melrose Place/PIX items to commuters.

Katherine Heigl is taking a five-episode leave of absence from ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy to star in the romantic comedy feature film Life as We Know It. Heigl will be gone from the show starting this month and won’t appear until approximately November. At the same time, co-star Ellen Pompeo will also be off the show for her maternity leave.

The production company seeks families and businesses located in the NYC Tri-State area that have differing viewpoints on “going green” and ones with out-of-control wasting habits.
