Don Hewitt, 86, the creator and former executive producer of CBS’ 60 Minutes died yesterday of pancreatic cancer. The longtime newsmagazine show debuted September 24, 1968, symbolizing Don’s vision to create a new form of news program similar to Life magazine on television. Don began with CBS in 1948 and with his customary humor sprinkled and said this during a 2004 CBS News interview, “It was like a bunch of kids playing with Play-Doh. We had no idea what we were doing in the early days. It was horse-and-buggy. Nobody knew what he was doing, but you didn’t care because who had a television set?” During his long TV news career, Don invented the use of cue cards for anchors and he was the first to implement superimposing type at the bottom of television screens. He also directed CBS’ first television newscast with Douglas Edwards in 1948 and executive produced the first 30m newscast when CBS Evening News, anchored by Walter Cronkite, moved from 15 minutes to 30 minutes in 1963. In another interview with B&C last year, where he reminisced about the changes he witnessed during his stellar 50-year career, Don said one of the most significant changes he helped usher in involved women in broadcasting. In 1984, Don tapped Diane Sawyer as the first female correspondent on 60 Minutes. “The one biggest change I’ve seen in television news for the better is the women,” Don said. “How we went that long without realizing how good women were as broadcasters, I’ll never know.”
