ON TELEVISION
NBC News will have former Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw moderate Meet the Press through the November presidential election. Brokaw will start next week saying he “volunteered for the job” to honor his friend and colleague Tim Russert who died of a heart attack June 13. The show will still be based in Washington, D.C. with Betsy Fischer as Executive Producer. According to NBC News President Steve Capus, Brokaw is only filling in temporarily but this interim period gives NBC more time to find a permanent replacement.

CASTING CALL
Casting will begin early next month for Janet Jackson’s untitled reality competition project from 25/7 Productions and Wright Crear Management. In this series, Janet will be mentor and help launch the career of a new talent. Auditions are open to males and females who are at least 16 years old and appear to be between 16 and 22 years old and have a genuine combo talent as a singer and dancer. Four live auditions will take place nationwide starting in Chicago July 1 with callbacks July 2; New York July 5 with callbacks July 6; Atlanta July 9 with callbacks July 10; and Los Angeles dates TBD. NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams will be the moderator of Meet The Press this Sunday, filling in for the late Tim Russert. Steve Capus, NBC News President said the network will take their time to permanently replace Russert both in the positions of Meet The Press moderator and as NBC Washington Bureau Chief. In the meantime, NBC News talent will fill in each week until a decision on who should take over has been reached.

Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew (Premiere) at 10pm

MTV and Janet Jackson are developing a music competition series with 25/7 Productions, says Variety. The untitled project has begun casting and Janet would be mentor to singer and dancer hopefuls with the goal of finding the next Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake or Usher. Many of the details of the show, such as the grand prize, are not yet worked out, although the show would likely be shot on various street locations rather than inside a studio.

Don Cornelius, founder of the Soul Train media franchise, announced he sold it to MadVision Entertainment, Inc., a multimedia company that concentrates on urban content and production founded by Kenard Gibbs, Peter Griffith and Anthony Maddox and supported by private equity firm InterMedia Partners, L.P. Currently in syndication, Soul Train began in 1970 and includes more than 1,100 hours of footage from its 37 years.
